Various Types of Human Brainstem Structures

The brain stem is the lower part of the human brain where the spinal cord enters the grey matter of the cerebrum. The parts of the brain stem include the medulla, pons, and midbrain. The brain stem is where the cranial nerves and the motor and sensory neurons of the spinal cord converge, making it an extremely vulnerable structure. The brain stem is also involved in integrative biological functions.
Medulla oblongata , Midbrain, Pons
Medulla oblongata
Entered/Authored by Alicia Prater Modified Saturday, 01 March 2008 11:15

Description: The medulla oblongata is the lower portion of the human brain stem. The medulla is involved in autonomic functions such as heart rate, respiration, blood pressure, swallowing, vomiting, and defecation.

Also known as: Mesencephalon

Description: The midbrain of the human brain stem is the middle portion of the stem. It is closely associated with the motor system pathways. Components of the midbrain include the substantia nigra, cerebral aqueduct, and red nucleus.
