Various Types of Plastic

Plastic is a material based on polymers that is often derived from petroleum. The term "plastic" refers to their ability to be easily shaped and processed into various forms.
Polymethyl methacrylate, Polystyrene, Polypropylene, Thermosets, Polyethylene, High Density Polyethylene, Polycarbonate, Polyvinyl Chloride
Polymethyl methacrylate
Entered/Authored by Chris Modified Saturday, 14 April 2007 14:34

Also known as: PMMA

Description: Polymethyl methacrylate is a commonly used thermoplastic.

Polystyrene
Entered/Authored by Chris Modified Saturday, 14 April 2007 14:35

Also known as: PS

Description: Polystyrene is a commonly used thermoplastic.

A
Polypropylene
Entered/Authored by Chris Modified Saturday, 14 April 2007 14:35

Also known as: PP

Description: Polypropylene is a commmonly used thermoplastic.

Thermosets
Entered/Authored by Chris Modified Saturday, 14 April 2007 14:35

Description: Thermosetting resins harden by chemical crosslinking reactions among the molecules that make up the plastic and become thermosets. They cannot be remelted and reformed because they decompose chemically upon reheating.

Facts: Thermosets are usually generated from polymers with low molecular weights (i.e. shorter polymers) because the thermosetting process results in crosslinking among the smaller molecules and theoretically the formation of one giant molecule.

Polyethylene
Entered/Authored by Administrator Modified Sunday, 01 April 2007 21:09

Also known as: PE, PET, PETE, #1 plastic

Description: Polyethylene is a commonly used thermoplastic.

Uses: Polyethylene is often used for plastic beverage bottles such as water bottles, juice bottles, and soda bottles.

High Density Polyethylene
Entered/Authored by Administrator Modified Saturday, 14 April 2007 14:38

Also known as: HDPE, #2 plastic

Uses: HDPE is commonly used for food containers such as gallon milk bottles.

Polycarbonate
Entered/Authored by Administrator Modified Tuesday, 06 March 2007 14:23

Also known as: Lexan

Polyvinyl Chloride
Entered/Authored by Chris Modified Saturday, 28 April 2007 02:38

Also known as: PVC

Description: Polyvinyl chloride is a commonly used thermoplastic. Polyvinyl chloride is the largest polymer in the vinyl group and the most versatile of the thermoplastics.
