Various Types of Printers

Printers are machines that print text and/or graphics on paper. Printers are most often connected to a computer. Impact printers feature one or more tiny hammer-like devices that strike the surface of the paper through an ink ribbon. Non-impact printers do not strike the surface of the paper to deposit the pigment.

Inkjet printer

Also known as: Ink jet, bubble jet

Description: Ink jet and bubble jet printers utilize print heads that spray drops of liquid ink onto the paper. Ink jet printers utilize a piezoelectric element to squeeze tiny droplets of ink out of an ink tank by mechanical action. Bubble jet printers use a tiny heater to generate and expel ink vapor bubbles. Ink jet printouts have a tendency to smear when they are just out of the printer and are still wet and when they are exposed to moisture later on.

Laser printer
Entered/Authored by Chris Modified Wednesday, 13 June 2007 01:59

Description: Laser printers work in a manner similar to a photocopier. The process is called electrophotography. A roller is uniformly charged with static electricity, then a laser is used to remove the charge from portions of the roller in the pattern of the desired image. Fine powdered ink (toner) is applied to the roller. The toner only sticks to the parts of the roller without a static electrical charge (the parts that were hit by the laser). The toner is transferred from the roller to the paper through use of an electrostatic field. Then the ink is fused into the paper permanently using pressure and heat.

Laser printers produce very high quality output and are very fast.
