Slingbox
Entered/Authored by Chris Modified Thursday, 15 March 2007 09:10

Brand name(s): Sling Media

Description: The Slingbox is a hardware device that connects to audio/visual devices and streams their video and audio signal over a local area network (LAN) or the internet. The Slingbox attaches to a router via an ethernet cable. The Slingbox does not have its own wireless capability. The video and sound that is streamed by the Slingbox is viewed and heard with SlingPlayer software on a personal computer or a handheld device that runs a mobile version of the Windows operating system. While the SlingPlayer software for personal computers is free, mobile versions of the SlingPlayer software require an additional purchase.

There are three versions of the Slingbox: The Slingbox Tuner, Slingbox AV, and the Slingbox Pro.

Features:
The Slingbox Tuner features the following connections:

  • RF input F connector
  • Passthrough output for the F connector
  • RJ-45 ethernet connection
  • Power adapter input

The Slingbox AV features the following connections:

  • Composite (RCA jacks) video + left and right audio inputs
  • S-Video input
  • RJ-45 ethernet connection
  • Jack for IR emitters (for remote control of audio visual devices)
  • Power adapter input

The Slingbox Pro features the following connections:

  • Four input channels as follows
    1. RF input F connector
    2. Composite (RCA jacks) video + left and right audio inputs
    3. S-Video + left and right audio RCA jack inputs
    4. HDMI input (Requires additional purchase of the HD Connect Cable)
  • Passthrough output for the F connector
  • Passthrough outputs for the composite video + left and right audio
  • Passthrough outputs for the S-Video + left and right audio RCA jack
  • RJ-45 ethernet connection
  • Jack for IR emitters (for remote control of audio visual devices)
  • Power adapter input

Passthrough outputs allow for connecting two devices to the respective inputs. For example, if you have a DVD player attached to your television with an S-Video cable and you plug that S-Video cable into the Slingbox instead, you can connect from the S-Video passthrough output on the Slingbox to your television so that both the Slingbox and your television are connected to the DVD player.

LocationFree TV
Entered/Authored by Chris Modified Thursday, 15 March 2007 09:11

Brand name(s): Sony

Description: Users of Sony's LocationFree products can view and control the signal from their cable or satellite boxes or other audio visual equipment via a local area network (LAN) or the internet using a personal computer.

The LocationFree product line includes the LF-B10 LF-B20 base stations and the LocationFree TV Box. The LocationFree TV Box is a receiver for the streamed signal that a television set can be connected to. The LF-B20 includes wireless connectivity to a wireless router so that no ethernet cable is required, which can be an advantage if running a cable from the broadband internet router to the vicinity of the television is not practical.

Features: The LF-B20 base station features the following connections:

  • First channel: S-Video plus composite (RCA jacks) video + left and right audio inputs
  • Second channel: Composite (RCA jacks) video + left and right audio inputs
  • Passthrough outputs for only the first channel of S-Video + composite video + left and right audio RCA jacks
  • RJ-45 ethernet connection
  • Two jacks for IR emitters (for remote control of audio visual devices)
  • Power adapter input

Passthrough outputs allow for connecting two devices to the respective inputs. For example, if you have a digital video recorder (DVR) attached to your television with an S-Video cable and you plug that S-Video cable into the LocationFree TV base unit instead, you can connect from the S-Video passthrough output on the LocationFree TV base unit to your television so that both the base unit and your television are connected to the DVR.
