Various Types of Skeletal Joints

Joints are the contact points for bones in the skeleton. They are classified based on structure, function, biomechanics, and anatomy. Ligaments are connective tissues that lay over the joints to help hold bones in place.

Also known as: Synarthrosis joints (no mobility)

Description: A fibrous joint is a structural classification for bones joined with dense fibrous connective tissue, containing mostly collagen. They include sutures, found on the skull at early ages; syndesmosis, somewhat moveable and found between the long bones such as the arms and legs; and gomphosis, the joint between a tooth and the jawbone.

Also known as: Amphiarthrosis joints (limited flexibility)

Description: A cartilaginous joint is a structural classification for bones joined by cartilage. These joints include the spinal column's vertebrae.
