Various Types of Volcanoes

Volcanoes are vents in the crust of the Earth (or other planets and moons) from which molten rock, ash and other debris, and steam are ejected. They can be grouped into four main types.
Cinder cones, Composite volcanoes, Shield volcanoes, Lava domes
Cinder cones
Entered/Authored by Chris Modified Saturday, 03 November 2007 10:40

Description: The simplest type of volcano, cinder cones are formed with the cooled lava and other particles from a single vent.

Composite volcanoes
Entered/Authored by Chris Modified Saturday, 03 November 2007 10:40

Also known as: stratovolcanoes

Description: Composite volcanoes are steep, symmetrical, and often large enough to be considered mountains. They are built by thousands of eruptions containing ash debris followed by lava flows.

Shield volcanoes
Entered/Authored by Chris Modified Saturday, 03 November 2007 10:41

Description: Shield volcanoes are dome-shaped, have gentle slopes, and are built almost entirely from fluid lava flows rather than ash and other debris.

Lava domes
Entered/Authored by Chris Modified Saturday, 03 November 2007 10:41

Also known as: Volcanic domes

Description: Lava domes are formed by lava that is too viscous (resistant to flow) to flow a significant distance. Lava tends to pile near the vent, and the dome may grow by expansion from within.
